Early Learning Activities at Rainbow

Letterland

LETTERLAND was created by Lyn Wendon in England over 20 years ago. She wanted to bring the alphabet alive and help children understand how it works.

Early Learning and Development In LETTERLAND each letter of the alphabet is represented by a special 'pictogram' character. Each character has been created and designed to represent the sounds which letters make in words.

For example, by saying the names of a Letterlander, Clever Cat, Lucy Lamp Light, Yellow Yo-Yo Man,etc children already have their associated sound on their lips.

The Letterlanders names are alliterative which immediately taps into the building of phonemic awareness skills. Children are enchanted by the characters and animals in this secret place called LETTERLAND and educators know that if children are interested, they learn without even realizing.

Early Learning and Development Letterland is a structured, systematic program with an emphasis on:
  • language: listening, speaking and communicating
  • phonic skills and phonemic awareness
  • whole word recognition
  • linking reading and spelling
  • sentence awareness
  • reading for meaning
  • early creative writing
A wide range of learning resources, including teacher's guides, story books, readers, software, posters, games and CDs, ensures Letterland can grow with your child.

Story time

The staff at Rainbow Early Learning Centre, believe that early literacy skills are one of the most vital skills in making sure that each child has the ability to communicate (both expressive and receptive language).

Early Learning and Development Story time is a fun and enjoyable time which takes place each day of the week in all rooms. It may take place in group times (formal), throughout the day either one on one or in small groups (informal) and / or both.

Staff may extend the stories time by introducing, music and movement activities, ask questions which relate to the story, encourage the children to draw picture about what happened ect. All this depends on the age and stage of development of the children.
